Prior Elections

Prior to implementing district-based elections, the City of Coalinga utilized an at-large election system. Under this system, all registered voters within the City were able to vote for all five City Council seats, regardless of where candidates or voters resided within the community.

District-Based Election System

Under the current district-based election system, City Councilmembers are elected by the voters residing within their respective districts. Each Councilmember must live within the district they represent, and only registered voters within that district are eligible to vote for that seat.

The City of Coalinga is divided into five Council districts, with each district represented by one Councilmember. This structure promotes equitable geographic representation and ensures that the unique needs of each area of the City are more effectively represented in local decision-making.
